Or as a writer, they certainly make good prompts and I want to start making up my own story. Those are all kind of bizarre and mysterious in ways, but they make me want to know more at least. The pattern of buttons is the feeling that captures the unwary traveler. It was a sad afternoon in September when they proved God doesn’t exist. Here are a few good ones that just came up for me:Ĭall me Aunt Maude and let me tell you my story.

The sentence structure is always the same. After a while they start becoming redundant and repetitive. Have you ever tried an online first sentence or writing prompt generator? I don’t use them for anything more than inspiration, but I enjoy playing around with them. And that’s why a first sentence is so important whether we remember it or not. And I still feel that way about the book and about those two mutes who were always together. I remember how it made me feel after I read it. For me that first sentence is just magical, but that’s because I know those characters and I remember what happens to them. It’s from The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers: “ In the town, there were two mutes and they were always together.” I did read #94 and have been wanting to read it again lately. I’ve never read those books either but their first sentences make me want to. Hartley’s The Go-Between, “ The past is a foreign country they do things differently there.” I much prefer the eccentric like #67 from Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar, “ It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn’t know what I was doing in New York.” It’s usually the ones that are referred to in pop culture time and time again that get stuck in my head, like “Call me Ishmael.” Boring! I’ve never even read Moby-Dick, but there it is at #1 on the list.
